PEARL HARBOR (July 5, 2014) Adm. Harry B. Harris Jr., commander of U.S. Pacific Fleet, ceremoniously pounds rice flour with a mallet during a reception aboard the Republic of Korea Navy's ROKS Soeae Ryu Seong-ryong (DDG 993) as part of exercise Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2014. Twenty-two nations, more than 40 ships and submarines, more than 200 aircraft and 25,000 personnel are participating in RIMPAC exercise from June 26 to Aug. 1, in and around the Hawaiian Islands. The world's largest international maritime exercise, RIMPAC provides a unique training opportunity that helps participants foster and sustain the cooperative relationships that are critical to ensuring the safety of sea lanes and security on the world's oceans. * 이지스함은 강력한 레이더로 수백㎞ 이상 떨어진 곳에서 적 항공기나 미사일을 발견하여 요격할 수 있어 현존하는 함정 가운데 방어력이 가장 뛰어나다. 이 때문에 '꿈의 함정' 또는 '신의 방패'라고도 불린다. 대한민국은 미국, 일본, 스페인, 노르웨이에 이어 5번째 이지스함 보유국이 되었다. 세종대왕함, 율곡이이함에 이어 세번째로 개발된 대한민국 해군의 이지스함인, 서애 류성룡함은 2011년 3월 24일 울산 현대중공업에서 진수되었다. 임진왜란 당시 이순신과 권율 장군을 천거하여 나라는 구하는데 공을 세운 서애 류성룡의 이름을 함명으로 확정하였으며 함번은 DDG-993이다.
